What made you look into Riskrunner?
We were looking for a tool that could visualize our bowtie risk assessment diagrams. Before Riskrunner, we were already familiar with the bowtie concept but we captured information in tabular and list form. The tabular form made it less appealing to discuss and engage with. With the visualizations, our subject matter experts intuitively see how the threat scenarios can become consequences, and the control measures that should prevent that. It also allows us to assign risk levels in more detail. That leads to more on-point discussions and ultimately saves us time.
In what areas has Riskrunner made an impact?
As an airline, every operational change we make must be risk assessed to explore what the impact of the change may be. Our risk analysts do this together with operational experts in workshops. The tool is especially suited for interactively capturing their thoughts and structuring them, with features to quickly edit, move and convert. This ensures nothing is overlooked. For example, we’ve had great discussions with our cabin organisation on lithium-ion batteries. The tool clearly showed the scenarios and available controls, allowing us to quickly adjust things based on their input. These discussions make our organization stronger.
We also have to demonstrate to authorities how we implement legislation. By making use of Riskrunner’s definition feature, we added fields to link specific chapters of legislation to our controls. That way, everywhere we use that control, we can explicitly show what legislation it covers. It also works the other way around; we can see which definitions are used where.
Part IS is a relatively new addition to aviation regulation focusing on information security. It requires that all organizations describe how breaches in information integrity can impact operational safety. As the guidance materials suggest, we want to use bowtie to demonstrate the link between our IT processes and our operational risks using Riskrunner.
What was it like starting to use Riskrunner?
In Riskrunner, you can define any field you want yourself. That provides great flexibility, but you have to configure it in a smart way to get the most out of it. Resilium has assisted us with sensible templates and considerations. Even though they’re not aviation specialists, we felt they really understood our questions and were a useful sparring partner. You can see that Resilium is not just a software company, but also understands the world of risk management. That shows in the Riskrunner tool, as well as the training courses they provide. They’ve set up a direct chat function for us, making it very easy to report issues or ask questions.
Any future plans for Riskrunner?
We’ve been using Riskrunner now for over a year. It’s nice seeing how quickly the tool develops and new features are added. We may look into integrating it more with our occurrence reporting tools, to get the full insight on our occurrences in relation to our risk assessment scenarios and controls. With the import and export functionality we can already do some of this manually, but we’ll be on the lookout for features that make that easier.
Summary
